Abstract

Women’s economic empowerment is crucial for growth of the economy within the country and globally. The overall objective of this study was to assess women’s economic empowerment among women involved in TASAF project in Kisarawe District. The specific objectives were to identify the activities performed by TASAF relating to women empowerment; to examine level of women participation in selected TASAF project activities; to determine contribution of TASAF to enhance women economic development; to describe challenges that women face in implementing income generating activities. The study adopted a case study research design, total of 100 respondents were involved. The study used questionnaire survey and interview schedule for key informant. A descriptive statistic was used to identify the activities performed by women who were supported by TASAF project and social demographic characteristics. The results showed that women were involved in small business, livestock keeping, food vending, selling vegetables, fruits, fish, homemade soaps and local beer. The study further revealed that majority of the respondents was economically empowered especially in aspects like decision making, contribution to family issues and freedom of movement. The study concluded that, participation in TASAF initiated activities had a great potential to empower women economically. It is recommended that stakeholders and NGOs should encourage women to participate in TASAF activities through provision of trainings and awareness rising. Also, financial institutions should provide soft loans to women in order to help them to establish income generating activities which leads to women economic development.
