Abstract

This research focused on improving the income of Uamsho group members through pig production at Hamuyebe village in Ukerewe District. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies and questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation, and an interview method were used in data collection to accomplish this research report. Some methods were used in data collection, like interviews, focus group discussions, and questionnaires, before data were analyzed and presented in this report. The selection of respondents employed a probability sampling technique to ensure the actual data collected. Several challenges limit pig production in Ukerewe district, though farmers are trying to deal with them because they engage in learning toward significant improvement. Findings show that farmers dealing with pig production need access to financial resources, knowledge, entrepreneurship skills and support from the government. Difficult conditions from financial institutions, particularly banks, to access loans and lack of collateral are the main challenges to farmers in getting loans. Regardless of the mentioned obstacles, most community members, primarily engaged in village saving and lending (VSL) in the Ukerewe district, continue to find entrepreneurial skills. Through capacity building and supply of improved pig bleeds to producers, entrepreneurship skills should be imparted to farmers and group members to strengthen their capacity and knowledge.
