Abstract

The examined the effects of teaching and learning resources on student’s learning in Zanzibar primary schools at the Michenzani Ward in Pemba. The specific objectives were to identify the teaching learning resources available in Michenzani Ward primary schools, examine effects of available teaching and learning resources on student’s performance, identify alternative teaching learning resources for primary students. The study was conducted in Michenzani, Makoongwe and Shidi schools. 86 respondents used, which included teachers, school chairpersons and Ministry of Education officers. Qualitative and Quantitative were used. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview schedules and documentary reviews. The findings showed that all the three schools in Michenzani Ward had teaching and learning materials that differ from one school to another. The findings also revealed that there was shortage of electrical equipment’s like computers, overhead projectors and electricity services. The findings further revealed that perception towards the uses of teaching and learning materials have positive impacts to primary school students learning. Due to findings it was concluded that teaching learning resources have effects on the students learning. Initiatives these resources is left to the teachers and very little support is received from outside. Furthermore, resources needed are within the capacity of the Ministry of Education and other stake holders, hence efforts needed to join forces On the basis of the findings and conclusions. It is recommended that the government should supply adequate teaching and learning materials, provide in-services training about improvisation of teaching and learning materials and building more classrooms, libraries and laboratories.
