Abstract

In Tanzania dropouts is a serious problem in our schools in primary school and it continues to Secondary Schools which calls for intervention necessary to try to prevent students from continuing on this path. The study investigated the on factors which contribute to Secondary School girls drop out of Schools in Serengeti districts council. Specific objectives were: to investigate the social and economic factors that led to girls students to drop out from secondary school in Serengeti District Council, to identify the cultural factors that led girl students to drop out from secondary school in Serengeti District Council and to examine the educational strategies for reducing problem of girl’s dropout at the selected study. The study used mixed research approach in reaching at conclusion. The sample size was 91 individuals comprised of 1 District educational officer, 5 ward educational officers, 5 heads of schools, 30 class teachers, 30 students and 20 parents. Data was collected through questionnaire, interviews, focus group discussion, and document analysis. The findings indicated that that there are many factors influencing girls’ students’ drop out in secondary schools in Serengeti district council which include; economic, cultural and school related factors, lack of consciousness on education issues, lack of education in the families, lack of family planning and negative attitude towards education. The study revealed that that poverty is the major cause of the girl school drop outs in Serengeti District. The study therefore recommended that the government should find appropriate measures to address poverty in schools in order to assist children persist in schooling. Contrary to that many adolescents especially girl children end up engaging in other issues which lead to drop out from schools. Keywords: Dropout, Girls Student, Serengeti District, Tanzania.
