Abstract

This study investigated the factors influencing gender inequality in secondary education in Temeke Municipal, Tanzania. Objectives of the study were to find out factors influencing gender inequalities in girls participation, examine barriers faced by girls on participation and identifying strategies to improve gender inequality in secondary education. The study was conducted in three secondary schools in Temeke District. An exploratory survey design was used where structured questionnaires captured both quantitative and qualitative information from sampled secondary schools. A total of 124 respondents participated in the study 12 were teachers, 3 heads of schools, 78 students and 34 parents. The results of the study revealed that 54% of respondents showed that despite many factors contributing to students’ success in education, personal efforts (hard working) weighed much to their true success. Nature of inequalities among families determined girls’ participation in secondary education. It was discovered that girls with both parents faced little challenges than girls with no or single parents. There is a need therefore for education stakeholders to eliminate gender inequality in secondary education through improving school environment and school culture.
