Abstract

This study was carried out to examine and asses the role of peer education among youths in managing and shaping their sexual behavior. The study further looks into the weaknesses and strengths in the peer education framework in Tanzania. The study employed case study design, which provided the opportunity and flexibility in the use of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Thus, questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. The study used both, simple random sampling and purposeful sampling approaches in the selection of respondents and the study areas. Simple random sampling was used to select four streets namely Buguruni Shell, Mnyamani, Malapa and Madenge while purposeful sampling was used to select peer educators and youth outside school settings. Findings show that peer education is one of the best ways that can be used in minimize the effects of irresponsible sexual behaviour among youths including those that live out of school setting. The use of peer education improves health and plays a big role in the rehabilitation processes of the youths who have been affected. 74% show that peer education interventions increased HIV knowledge, reduced drug equipment sharing among drug users and increased condom use. On the other side, the study revealed peer education failed to reach remote areas where the problem is persistent. Lack of unskilled peer educators and sustainable training marked another weakness of peer education. The study recommends training many peer educators, creating centres for the affected ones, imposing strong rehabilitation processes and ensuring safe environment of growth for young people are among strategies that should be put in place to reduce risks among youths. More researches should be carried out to improve the lives of young generation.
