Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
The study examined the effectiveness of school committees on pupils‘ academic performance in public primary schools in Morogoro Municipality. The study adopted a quantitative approach, and a cross-sectional design to collect the information at one specific point in time. The target population was 675 respondents; 168 respondents were the study's sample size. The sampling techniques used, were purposive, stratified and simple random sampling. The questionnaire, checklist and documentary review were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed that the decision-making process from school committees does not affect pupils' academic performance because school committees participate to ensure pupils' success in their education activities. Different members of the school committees do not volunteer and do not influence the community to volunteer in school activities. Enhancing student achievement includes involving teachers in the school committee to suggest improvements for the school's educational progress. Moreover, the findings indicate that the school committee is engaged in decision-making to promote good behavior among students; this demonstrates that the committee is responsible for all decisions related to student discipline. The study concluded that the composition is suitable for including people like education stakeholders. If possible, pupils should enter the composition to contribute to topics related academics and school. The study recommends that to improve the pupils‘ academic performance in primary school, it is required to strengthen school committee training and involvement in implementing their set roles and accountability.
