Abstract

This study sought to assess the contribution of project-based learning to sustainability of rural livelihood projects established by beneficiaries of local government loans (women, youth and people with disabilities) in Tarime district. Specifically, the study examined how sustainability is evaluated during design and appraisal of livelihood projects proposed by beneficiaries of local government loans, examined project-based learning mechanisms available and how project-based learnings findings are used, and assessed how project-based learning findings are used to inform sustainability of established livelihood projects established by the beneficiaries of local government loans in Tarime district council. The study adopted cross-sectional research design. A total of 338 respondents were selected randomly to participate in household survey. In addition, 14 KIIs and 6 FGDs were conducted. To increase accuracy of data, kobo toolbox was used to collect data. Collected quantitative data was processed using SPSS and Ms. Excel while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The study findings revealed that project-based learnings contribute positively to sustainability through generation of new knowledge, increase of innovation and creativity and increase of quantity and quality of outputs produced. Moreover, study findings elucidated that because of absence of effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system, M&E activities are not implemented hence failure to capture lessons learnt and best practices. The study recommends strengthening M&E system and review local government loans regulations and guidelines in order projects funded by those loans to contribute to improvement of beneficiaries’ welfare. Keywords: Project-based learning, Sustainability, M&E system, rural livelihood projects.
