Abstract

The general objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of school development plans on enhancing school’s academic development among public secondary schools in Tanzania. Specifically, three objectives guided this study as one of it being to find out the extent school management carry out school development plans to enhance schools’ academic development plans, to examine the extent school development plans are implemented to enhance school’s academic development and to explore the contribution of school development plans in enhancing academic development in public secondary schools. The used cross-sectional survey design where it involved the sample size of 103 respondents, some were selected randomly and others purposively. Data were collected through interview, observation checklist and questionnaires. The data analysis was conducted through SPSS version 16.0. The content validity of the research tools was assessed during the pilot study which were conducted in six schools. The Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient was generated to get reliability of the item. The study found that most of the schools’ management carried out SDP towards enhancing school academic development; however, the school board members revealed that curriculum delivery as the most focused area. The study revealed that SDP contributed much on student’s performance in local and national examinations. Also, the study found that poor community/parental participation especially on school development plan focuses on school physical facilities and parents’ involvement in school development. The study recommended that each school should prepare SDP, action plans and programs in order to carry out SDP.
