Abstract

This study investigated the influence of gender and school type on the key determinants that affect the adoption of electronic textbooks in Tanzanian secondary schools. The study underscored the significance of advanced-level students' performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and the presence of facilitating conditions in influencing the adoption of electronic textbooks in Tanzanian schools. The study integrated the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model (UTAUT) and the Technology-Organisation-Environment framework (TOE) sub-contexts. It used a positivist philosophy, a quantitative approach and a survey-based research design to collect data. The study encompassed 370 respondents from 22 advanced-level secondary schools in the Dar es Salaam region. The research results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions significantly influenced students' intention to adopt electronic textbooks. In addition, when considering gender, social influence had a notable adverse impact on female students in comparison to their male counterparts. Similar to this, when examining school type, facilitating conditions significantly negatively impacted students in private schools as opposed to those in public schools. Additionally, the study recommended the importance of students having access to mobile devices, certified electronic textbooks, and a clear grasp of their usage for successful electronic textbooks adoptions. The insights derived from this study offer valuable guidance to policymakers, students, educational institutions, and other stakeholders on improving the adoption of electronic textbooks in the Tanzanian context.
