Abstract

The study assessed the influence of leadership style practices on the students academic performance in selected primary schools in Korogwe district.Three objectives guided the study: to assess leadership practices adopted by heads of schools in managing primary schools in Korogwe district; to examine the influence of leadership practices on pupils academic perfomance in selected primary schools in Korogwe district and; to suggest ways to improve leadership practices to realize students academic performance in primary schools in Korogwe.The study was guided by the mixed methods design where questionnaire and interviews were employed as main data collection methods.The study indicated that the heads of schools practiced mainly the democratic as opposed to leizes fair leadership practices.The practice thus were characterised with heads of schools highly involving the heads of departments and other staff in decision making at school level.Furthermore the results indicated that the democratic leadership practices affected positively the teaching at school as it created effective communication between heads and surbordnates, participative in decision making and allocating resources for effective teaching.Leizes fair was negatively affecting the teaching as it created loose classroom control over teachers actions of unattending classes, it made the poor discipline among students and it was not following and enphasizising on time management to cover lessons.The last set of findings showed that use of delegation of power exposing the heads of schools in retreat sessions, training new appointees on leadership and effective communication were recommended as strategies to enhance leadership practices among heads of schools in Korogwe district.The study recommdes that the appointed hads of schools must be exposed to retreat programmes to empower them on leadership capacity in managing schools.
