Abstract

Learning institutions play significant role in provision of disaster awareness and preparedness education. The level of disaster awareness and preparedness education has remained very low in the country. This study evaluated the risk factors for disasters preparedness and awareness education among the secondary schools in Nyamagana District. Specific objectives were to identify the disaster risk factors influencing disasters in secondary schools in the study area; to determine the level to which disaster awareness education is provided; and to assess challenges facing secondary schools in the provision of awareness education and disaster prevention. The study adopted case study research design where data were collected from 220 respondents using questionnaire and interviews. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Findings revealed that the factors influencing disaster in secondary schools were: lack of disaster management plan and early warning information, lack of regular inspection and maintenance of school infrastructure, and school exposure to extreme weather and disaster events. Poor involvement of stakeholders in disaster preparedness programs, lack of practical disaster knowledge in education curriculum and lack of fund to support disaster initiatives were the challenges facing secondary schools in the provision of awareness education and disaster prevention. The study concludes that, addressing risk factors and challenges through collaborative efforts is crucial for reducing disaster impacts and protecting lives and infrastructure in the schools and surrounding communities. The study recommends the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in collaboration with Disaster Management Department under the Prime Minister’s office to strategize with other stakeholders such as private companies, local and international NGOs in provision of intensive disaster awareness, preparedness, and management education in secondary schools. Keywords: Awareness Education, Disaster Preparedness, Risk Factors.
