Abstract

This study aimed to assess the socio-economic contribution of SOS-FP to the empowerment of women in the Arumeru district. The sampling techniques used in this study were the random and purposive samplings. The sample size of this study involved 50 respondents selected among women who are the beneficiaries of the SOS-FSP program in three wards, the Kimnyak, Olosiva, and Olorien ward located in the Arumeru district. The study used aquestionnaire, interviews, and focus group discussions to collect data. The findings from this study showed that the socio-economic activities of women whom SOS-FSP is supporting are small-scale agricultural activities such as animal keeping, poultry keeping, petty trade, and selling bananas, chicken, and horticulture products. The socio-economic impact of SOS-FSP on women's empowerment is creating awareness and capacity-building skills through vocational training skills and income-generating activities., Women got access to grants to establish small businesses, and the establishment of Village Saving and Land Association (VSLA groups) had a significant impact on ensuring women had access to soft loans with very low interest as the opportunity to expand their businesses. The Social Impactof the SOS-FSP Program was to empower women to own assets, provide quality education to the children, access health services, and have the awareness of opportunities available within their community. The study recommends the formulation of a good policy that governs women's socio-economic empowerment—creating a good environment for women to perform their daily activities so as to improve socioeconomic welfare, to individual and community.
