Abstract

This study intended to investigate factors pushing professional teachers from public secondary schools. Specifically, this study examined personal, leadership, and family factors pushing professional teachers from public secondary schools in Ilala municipality, Tanzania. Maslow’s hierarchy of basic human needs theory (Enon, 1998) was used as a theoretical framework. This study applied both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The findings indicated personal factors such as lack of incentives, interpersonal relationship issues, and lack of personal motivation in the teaching profession pushed teachers from teaching profession. On the leadership, the study found that many teachers were discouraged by denial to pursue personal development plans such as further education or leave of absence and this was found to be more among male teachers. On the family factors, many good teachers absconded their teaching profession due to personal sickness, sickness in the family or marriage issues and this was found to be more prominent among female teachers. For action, the study recommends that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should provide leadership training to heads of school to empower them to positively lead the teachers. The study also recommends to the central government to take action by increasing incentives to the teachers for retention purposes. For further studies, it is recommended that more studies should be conducted in this area to explore ways in which school leadership can be used to retain professional teachers in the teaching profession. Key words: Public Secondary Schools, Professional Teachers, Factors Pushing.
