Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the factors contributing to poor academic performance among Zaramo Muslim in Mkuranga district, Tanzania. The research objectives were: The first was to assess the contribution of parenting styles in academic performance in secular system of education for Zaramo Muslim secondary school children. The second was to assess the influence of community interest in favoring secular education and its academic performance for Zaramo Muslim secondary school children. The third was to assess the impact of time management toward academic performance in secular system of education among Zaramo Muslim in secondary school children. The setting of the study was at Mkuranga district council in Pwani region. The study was qualitative in nature using phenomenological research design. The researcher was used 27 participants who used to collect data through observation, interviews and documentary review. The parenting style investigated have impact on academic performance among Zaramo Muslim students. Whereby, Authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles associated with good academic performance. Also permissive and uninvolved parenting styles when applied associated with bad academic performance. Moreover, low interested students and parents as well as poor time management associated with poor academic performance. The researcher recommended authoritarian parenting style to be used by Zaramo Muslims. Again, an integrated education system would be applied by the Tanzania government so as to ensure good performance among Zaramo Muslims.
