Abstract

The study was set to examine the role of local communities on enhancing sustainable water resources management in Nshupu village, Arumeru district Tanzania. The lack of projects with effective water resources management as well as technical and financial shortcomings, lead to many water projects being uncertain in the sustainability of water services in the study area, so the projects were short lived and collapsed.The study used cross-sectional research design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A questionnaire containing both open and closed ended questions was administered to 89 community members. In-depth interviews were conducted with key informants whereby interpretation and presentation of data was accomplished through descriptive statistics with the help of SPSS V 20 version and content analysis approaches respectively. The study established that community participation in the management of sustainable water resource is inevitable since resources are located in their vicinity. The study findings showed that, the sustainability of water project services in Nshupu village depended on the existence of reliable water sources. The study recommended that all community members that are women and men should be involved in the design, planning, and management of the rural water project. The village government should create awareness to the community about the importance of participating in managing and owning water projects that take place in the village. The study recommended the initiation of Monitoring and Evaluation in rural water projects to enhance water projects sustainability.
