Sustainability Determinants of Irrigation Projects of Local Government in Tanzania. A Case of Selected Irrigation Projects in Mkuranga District Council.

Abstract
The Sustainability of development projects is always a very sensitive area for the success of projects, but little attention has been considered. The study sought to determine the factors influencing sustainability of irrigation projects of Local Government in Mkuranga District. The specific objectives were; to identify Monitoring and evaluation practices influencing sustainability of irrigation projects, to determine institutional factors and financial factors influencing sustainability of irrigation projects. A quantitative methodology using descriptive survey was employed in the research. A sample size of 144 comprising 141 farmers selected using simple random sampling and 3 key informants selected using purposive sampling technique was used. Data collection instruments included check list which was administered to key informants and questionnaire administered to farmers in the three irrigation projects identified. The study supervisor examined the content of the instrument and advised the researcher on its validity. Quantitative data were collected from primary source and analyzed quantitatively using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) involving descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages) and inferential statistics (Multiple regression). The findings showed that monitoring & evaluation practices, institutional and financial factors had significant influence on sustainability of irrigation projects in Mkuranga district. The study therefore recommended: Monitoring and evaluation to be undertaken effectively, Government and investors to perform need assessment by think through local priorities and Stakeholder to be involved in all stages of project cycle.
