Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the influence student-centred teaching methods on student’s academic performance in Secondary School Basic Mathematics. The study was quantitative which used a pre-tests and post-test to collect data from experimental teaching. The population of the study was the ordinary level secondary school students in Dar es Salaam region. The sample consisted of 200 Form Four students from four secondary schools. Using the Probability lesson, scores were derived from the class tests, which were prepared by the researcher. The data analysis was done by using SPSS software tools. The findings showed that student-centred learning methods had significant influence on students’ performance as compared to teacher-centred methods. This means, the application of student-centred teaching and learning methods in mathematics results into good students’ academic performance. The study recommends using student-centred methods in teaching and learning Basic Mathematics in secondary schools. The government should control the number of teachers in secondary schools as well as insisting the application of student-centred methods in teaching and learning so that a good performance can be realised in Basic Mathematics. Stakeholders should endeavour to organize seminars and workshops to train teachers to apply active teaching methods in classrooms in order to improve students’ academic performance.
