The Effects of Corporal Punishment To Students’ Performance in Public Secondary Schools.

Abstract
The study examines the effects of corporal punishment to students’ performance in public secondary schools in Morogoro municipality. The study was guided by the following specific objectives; to examine different waysin which teachers use corporal punishment to raise students’ performance, to investigate the reasons for persistence use of corporal punishment in Morogoro Public Secondary schools and to examine the relationship between corporal punishment and academic performance to students. The study used mixed method design whereby both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Sample size for the study was 60 respondents which included DEO, DAO, head of school, teachers and students. Questionnaires were distributed as well as interviews were conducted to obtain primary data. Secondary data was collected through documentary review and the internet. Data was then analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The study revealed that there was relationship between the application of corporal punishment and the higher academic performance among secondary school students. The study concluded that corporal punishment was applied by secondary school teachers as among the way of encouraging learners to study hard and raise their performance. Hence, the study recommends that, the government should set up the well stipulated policy to ensure that secondary school teachers and students should built the spirit of teaching and learning to raise academic performance without corporal punishment.
