Abstract

This study sought to assess the Effectiveness of Conflict Resolution Methods Used by secondary school leaders in Ilala Municipality. The study was guided by three specific objectives: to explore stakeholders’ conceptions on conflict in secondary school community, assess methods used by school leaders in Ilala municipality to resolve conflict and assess challenges facing secondary school leaders to resolve conflicts. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed as well as case study design. Data collection was facilitated using questionnaires, interviews and observation. Data was then analysed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The findings indicated that the methods used by school leaders in conflict resolution are not effective enough to ensure a longer lasting peace of the school community. All of the students and teachers with the majority of Ward Education officers pointed to avoiding as a method used by their heads of schools to resolve conflict. Majority of Heads of schools pointed to the use of position power to conflicts resolution. It is only a handful of respondents who pointed to collaboration as one of the correct methods used by their Heads of schools to resolve conflict. This implies that conflicts in schools are not effectively resolved and this threatens the smooth provision of education. Majority of the respondents have also suggested the inclusion of conflict resolution knowledge in the teaching curriculum in order to gloom school leaders with knowledge on conflict resolution.
