Abstract

A project report on improving widows income through establishment of banana farm is the result of the Community Needs Assessment (CNA) conducted at Mikungani Village in Arumeru District. The CNA revealed that low and unreliable source of income is the core problem to majority of residents. The situation has been caused by poor agricultural practices as well as low technology level used in production, local varieties of seeds or seedlings used and lack of financial and marketing facilities. The whole community is peasants engaged in cultivation of maize, banana, cassava, beans and green vegetable. Basing on the findings it was found that establishment of improved banana farm was the most project that can improve the community income since it is perennial crop as compared to other crops. Among the opportunities found at the village includes, arable land, Extension workers, roads and irrigation canals. Using participatory methods four objectives were set; these were sensitization of a community of widow on cultivation of improved banana breeds, seeking for one acre of land, land survey and land preparation and procurement and planting of 280 improved banana seedlings .The expected outcome was establish improved banana farm, environmental conservation, increase the yield of banana produce hence sustainable income of the community. All objectives have been achieved as it was planned
