Abstract

This dissertation set out to make analysis on the domestic wastewater management systems in Kinondoni Municipality, Dar es Salaam City. It aimed to investigate the adequacy of the existing wastewater infrastructures to meet domestic wastewater management requirements, the actors involved and evaluate strategic measures for domestic wastewater management in the study area. The field survey that was conducted in three wards namely, Kigogo, Tandale and Mwananyamala deployed IBM-SPSS statistical analysis to assess the methods of domestic wastewater management systems. A total sample of 100 heads of the households was randomly drawn to respond to the household level questionnaires. Meanwhile, a total of four key informants, one from Magomeni Region DAWASCO office and three from Kinondoni Municipal Council helped to get detailed information. The results revealed that in Kinondoni Municipality 51% of households dispose wastewater from bathrooms to the pit latrines. However, 86% are lacking the central collection facilities. While 77% do not dispose wastewater separately from storm water, 57% disposes wastewater at open discharge or surface. The study findings showed that Kinondoni Municipal Council and DAWASCO provide information on wastewater management improvement in the study area. This study also used the Theory of Planned Behaviours to determine the accepted and rejected behaviours related to domestic wastewater management. Moreover, the study concluded that domestic wastewater management systems practised in Kinondoni Municipality are mainly poor. Furthermore, the study recommended the provision of education, involvement of local people, capacity building, exchange of information, communication, and implementation of laws and reduction of costs for the improvement. Finally, it recommended for further research to be undertaken for assessment of socio-economic impacts of domestic wastewater.
