Abstract

The main objective of this study was to examine social implications of roads traffic accidents in Musoma Municipal Council between 2014 and 2016.The study were guided by four specific objectives that are; to determine factors contributing to the roads traffic accidents between 2014 and 2016, to examine social impacts of road traffic accidents between 2014 and 2016, to find out vulnerable groups affected in road traffic accidents between 2014 and 2016 and lastly to determine measures to be taken to reduce roads traffic accidents in Musoma Municipal Council between 2014 and 2016. The study employed case study design, the sample of 100 respondents was selected using convenient sampling which was purposive and simple random sampling technique was used to select respondents. Semi-structured interviews, Focus Group Discussion, observations and documentary review methods of data collection were used to gather information and data were analysed using descriptive statistics for data related to quantitative and used thematic technique of analysing the qualitative data. The study findings showed that presence of counterfeit spare parts, alcoholism and drug abuse to drivers, illegal issuing of driving license and lack of important road signs contributes to the occurrences of road traffic accidents. Recommendations given include: government should provide civic education through the radio and television on proper use of the road, establishing a permanent control unit, inspection of all modes of transportation and the National Institute of Transport should be given a statutory mandate to train the drivers
