Abstract

This study aimed at exploring factors influencing the leadership preparation of headteachers in primary schools in Kilwa district Tanzania. A study involved School Inspectors, Education Officers, Ward Education Coordinators, head teachers, teachers and pupils. This study was used a mixed approach, data were coded and analysed using pie charts, percentages and narrations. The findings revealed that inadequate of funds from government was a cause for head teachers’ lack of refresher courses on leadership, frequent refresher courses for head teachers had a relationship with performance of pupils, headteachers did not attend workshops and seminars to improve their leadership skills, conflicts between school and community could affect performance of school leadership, community culture affected the success of primary school headteachers and unavailability of teaching and learning materials due to poor follow by headteachers led poor performance in PSLE. In order to improve the leadership of headteachers a study provide the following recommendations: government should organize refresher courses for headteachers to improve their leadership: government to collaborate with education stakeholders to collect funds which used to sponsor refresher courses for headteachers and formulation of specific plan to offer refresher courses to head teachers.
