Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
This study examined responses of teachers in Community Secondary Schools in Muleba district on Big Result Now (BRN) programme in Education. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to study perceptions, knowledge and attitudes of teachers on BRN programme and how BRN in education affected the teaching-learning environment and students’ performance. The study utilized the case study design and 96 respondents participated in this study. Instruments which were used are questionnaires, interviews and direct observation. The finding revealed that although teachers were aware of the BRN programme in Education, the way they came to know was through the mass media and there were insufficient formal communication to them on what BRN was about and its intended outcomes. Teachers were not trained for the BRN changes. Heads of schools who were to manage these changes were also not well informed on the programme. Instead, they were required to manage something they were not conversant with. In schools, BRN programme had little impact on both school learning and teaching environment and on teaching and learning strategies. The study recommended that heads of schools were to be trained their responsibilities in managing the change and on the objectives of Big Result Now programme in Education and what were required to be done in schools. It was also recommended that the Ministry should induct teachers on what were their responsibilities and provide schools with necessary teaching and learning facilities for effective implementation of BRN.
