Masters thesis, The Open University Of Tanzania.
Abstract
This study focused on School based factors accounting for form two performances in the National Examinations in community secondary schools in Hai district. The study
comprised three research objectives which were cultural, social interaction and economic influences on student’s academic performance. Socio-cultural and human relation theories were used to frame this study and used to understand how school culture, social interaction and school economic condition contributed to academic performance. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect information from 180 students and 60 teachers. The key findings are in line with the assumptions of this
study, where there were positive agreement that school rules and regulations had direct impact on students’ academic performance; positive teachers-teachers and
student’s-student’s relationships contributed to academic performance; and that there was positive relationship between the quality of teaching and learning resources and
students’ academic performance. The study recommends that the government and all the community members need to be concerned with how to transform primary and secondary schools to help children perform well in their studies. Specifically, the MoEVT through school inspectorate and education quality assurers should ensure that secondary schools have practical rules and regulation that students can follow; likewise, all the schools should have competent teachers and adequate teaching and learning resources to ensure all the students access quality education to perform to the best of their abilities.
