Abstract

This study examined the extent of WhatsApp usage for learning, time spent on the platform, its impact on academic performance, and the challenges encountered by students. Employing a quantitative approach, the research utilized questionnaires, and interviews as data collection tools. A sample size of 185 students was picked using the Yamane formula. Data were collected using a questionnaire and interview guide and analyse qualitative data using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics was used for qualitative data. The findings contribute to understanding WhatsApp's role in higher education and informing strategies for its effective integration into academic settings. The study finding presents insight into WhatsApp's impact, highlighting demographic factors, positive perceptions, and challenges faced by students. Key informants emphasize its transformative potential but stress the need for guidelines and training. The study synthesised key findings and recommends integration strategies while suggesting avenues for further research. It is recommended that there is a need to enhance institutional support, address privacy concerns, and maximize collaborative learning. Further research suggests focus on longitudinal studies, qualitative analyses, and interdisciplinary perspectives, aiming to inform evidence-based practices in leveraging WhatsApp for distance education.
