Abstract

This study assessed the effect of school quality assurance officers’ behaviour on teaching motivation in public secondary schools in Bagamoyo district council, Tanzania. The general objective of this study was to find out how quality assurance officers’ behaviors affect teaching motivation in public secondary schools in Bagamoyo district. The study had three specific objectives; it examined quality assurance officers’ behaviours in secondary schools; assessed the effect of school quality assurance officers’ behaviours on teachers’ motivation to teach in secondary schools and; determined desirable quality assurance officers’ behaviours for teachers’ motivation in schools. The study employed research paradigm, a mixed-methods research approach and a descriptive research design. A total of 100 respondents were involved in this study. Data collection methods were questionnaires and semi-structured interview. The study findings indicated that the school quality assurers’ behaviours act as role models to teachers and hold them in high esteem. The officers demonstrate good values and ethics that inspire admiration and trust. Specifically, teachers see positive behaviours in school quality assurance officers manifested through behaviours such as initiative taking, proactivity and persistence, which have positive and significant influence on teachers’ motivation. It was also found out that, imitative behaviour of the quality assurers is the most desired behavior as far as teacher’s motivation is concerned. It is concluded that, external quality assurers play a crucial role in influencing teaching motivation in schools. Proactive and persistance behaviours of external quality assurance officers should be reinforced to foster teachers’ positive feelings of being valued and cared.
