Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
The small number of under five children with birth certificates is a burning issue of the whole world. In Tanzania, there are no policies and structural reforms which have been initiated by the Government in an attempt to improve the number of under five children with birth certificates. Overall purpose is ‘to assess the factors contributing to the sustainability of the U5BR Initiative by UNICEF Tanzania’, so as to raise the number of under five children with birth certificates in Tanzania. The study results show that; there are two main factors that have high influence on the sustainability of U5BRI in Tanzania among other things include, presence of ‘Operational arrangements’ such as Registration tools, Strategic and Predictable funding, Monitoring and Evaluation, Willingness / Attitudes of RAs and Periodic Training, and ‘Community involvement and integration’ such as Practices and Attitudes and Recurrent Education. Study found that, obtainability of funds ensures project sustainability through funding all key facets of the project. About 83% of variations in sustainability of U5BRI were due to variations in Number of visits paid by U5BRI Coordinators at a centre, Perception of a provided certificate and Community Participation. To ensure sustainability of the U5BR Initiative, it is recommended that;- Mass education provision should be conducted to community on early birth registration via radios and during the village meetings and clinics; Continuous monitoring and evaluation should be emphasized for it encourages RAs feel responsible; and Allowance (strategic and predictable funding) in various forms should be provided.
