Abstract

The research was conducted to analyze the factors that affect girls’ academic performance in public secondary schools of Mkoani District. The study was guided by three objectives: to assess the communities’ awareness on girls’ academic performance, to explore the factors that affect girls’ academically and to identify the strategies taken to improve their performance in public schools. Descriptive survey and questionnaire were used. The questionnaire was administered to students, parents, subject teachers, head teachers from five secondary schools and DEO of Mkoani District. The sample constituted 126 respondents who were selected by systematic sampling. The data collected were analyzed descriptively using the IBM SPSS 20 vision. This study revealed that Girls’ academic performance is low due to the love disturbance, domestic activities, poverty, misuse of mobile phone, and long distance, family conflict, poor family and diseases, truancy, lack of motivation, teachers’ efforts and geographical location and child labor. The results on the conclusions, the recommends the government and community consider educating girls and motivating so as to perform better, provide hostels to schools and create conducive environment for learning. The study found that some parents, students, teachers and other stakeholders noted that girls’ academic performance have faced a lot of factors like distance from home to schools, domestics activities, misuse of mobile phone, absences of boarding schools, poor environment, low awareness and lack of supports. The study advices teachers to finish their syllabuses on time to help students perform better in their examination, parents and other stakeholders should educate girls on proper use of mobile phone for effective learning and not otherwise.
