Abstract

The study was undertaken to assess the attributes of heads of school towards academic performance. A case study of Nyamagana, District-Mwanza-Tanzania. It was guided by three objective: To evaluate parameters related to supervision as displayed by heads of school in academic activities and its contribution to academic performance, to assess creativity aspects of heads of school as experienced at school level and its contribution to academic performance and to examine elements of cooperation with other education stakeholders in school activities and its contribution to academic performance. This study adopted Social Learning Theory. A mixed methods research approach and cross-sectional research design were applied. The study involved respondents including teacher and heads of school. Data were collected through questionnaire, and interview guide. Also the researcher used the split-half to obtain the reliability of instruments giving 0.82 correlation coefficient. Qualitative date was analysed through descriptive statistics with the help of SPSS version 20 while qualitative data were thematically analysed. The study findings indicate that public secondary schools; students’ academic performance depends on attributes of heads of school for enabling them to engage in learning process effectively. The study concludes that most of heads of school in public secondary schools have positive attributes toward academic performance and are disappointed when their school did not perform well in academic matters. The study recommended that, education stakeholders, like government should put more emphasis on improvising school environment to ensure effective teaching and learning process which reflect on the attributes of heads of schools towards academic performance.
