Abstract

This study investigated the impact of administrative barriers to trade between Tanzania and Kenya: a case of small scale traders at Namanga, Arusha. The focus of the study were to examine the business performance in the context of administrative barriers to trade, to determine the type of administrative barriers to trade and to examine the impact of administrative barriers to trade between Tanzania and Kenya. This research adopted descriptive research design with cross sectional study where both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. The study population was the small scale traders and the sample size of 302 respondents selected by simple random sampling while purposive sampling techniques were applied for the selection of key informants (TRA Officers and council business officers). Questionnaires were administered to collected numerical data for small scale traders and the semi-structured interview guide was used to gather qualitative data from key informants. The qualitative data’s were analysed using thematic technique and results were presented in narratives, while quantitative data’s on the other hand were analysed using descriptive statistics through computer software known as SPSS version 22 where charts, percentages and frequencies were used to present data. The findings revealed that, the problem of administrative barriers still exists at Namanga-Arusha, Tanzania. The most reported negative impact that contributing to administrative barriers are mistrust, retaliation, political issues and taxes variation between these two countries. From the field findings it was recommended that, the two countries Tanzania and Kenya must ensure the implementation of common market protocol, these protocols guarantee the free movement of goods, services and investments, and therefore it could be easily to remove or reduce such negative impact.
