Abstract

The study investigated on how textbooks provision can affect the quality of the school curriculum in Tanzanian community secondary schools specifically Korogwe District council. The parameters were; availability of text books, ability to solve life challenges, innovation skills and generation of new ideas. The study specifically examined types of textbooks available for use by Korogwe District Council secondary schools, examined whether the textbooks provided by the school enables the Lerner to solve life challenges, provide innovative ideas to be consumed by public and assess the obstacles associated with provision of textbooks in schools. Behaviorist theory was used to explain how learners behavior may be changed by powerful of the curriculum they use and textbooks. Survey design and mixed approaches that helped in methodology and the sample of 95 participants out of 98 (97%) from a population of 5864 people comprising the school heads, students and teachers. Questionnaires, interviews, and documentary reviews were the main methods used for data collection. The results show that supplementary materials, reference textbooks were used in schools. Books failed to transform learner’s ability to solve their own problem, bring innovation and new ideas in their society in which they live. The level of teachers and community involvement was limited and these were noted as the leading challenges. The study recommends for high involvement of teachers and the community in textbook writing process. Keywords: School Curriculum, Quality, Textbooks and Community Secondary Schools
