Improving incomes of people with disabilities through shoe-making and sewing: the case of Rangeni group in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region.

Abstract
This dissertation is an outcome of the research study conducted in Same District and the project being implemented in the Hedaru ward. The project intended at improving incomes of people with disabilities through shoe-making and sewing activities. The community under study was a group of people with disability of deaf and physical. It is a smallest homogeneous group of 10 members living/found in the smallest possible geographical location, sharing same needs (source of income) for them to survive and same approach/interventions in attaining their needs. It is poor and low income community ranged from Tsh.20, 000 to 60,000 per month. They are unemployed with education level ranges from standard seven to Certificate of Secondary Education. Their marital status varies from single to married. The project covers a period between October2021 to August2022. The participatory community assessment was conducted in the village using participatory methods and tools like Focus Group Discussions (FGD), semi-structured Interviews and Field visit surveys. About six major community needs emerged, which needed to be urgently addressed. The identified Community needs were need sustainable incomes, access to market, food vending, poultry keeping, tailoring and tri cycle (Bajaj riding business). Among the needs identified, sustainable sources of income ranked first, after further assessment of the causes of the need, shoe-making and sewing was identified as projects that will enable them increase their incomes through sale of shoes within and outside the District. The study concludes and recommends that extra strategic efforts is still required to capacitate the disabled communities on income generating activities such as the shoe making and sewing projects.
