Abstract

The African continent has received more peacekeeping missions in its territory than other continents. The Central African Republic (CAR) is one of the African countries, which has hosted several peacekeeping missions since 1998. Nonetheless, a theatre of rebellions and chronic political instability, comprising the acute ongoing armed conflict from 2013 to date, has persisted in the CAR. To this end, this study investigated the role of the United Nations Peace-Keeping Missions in Resolving Conflicts in Africa, the case of the CAR. This is because the CAR is endowed with significant natural resources which are usually sources of conflict and geopolitics. The study applied both qualitative and quantitative methods. The sample comprised of 23 verified respondents. In analysing data, the study applied the descriptive data analytics to explore and describe the content findings. Overall, the MINUSCA played preponderant influence and role in resolving conflicts in the CAR from 2016 to 2019. Nonetheless, challenges inharmonious collaboration between the MINUSCA and the Government of the CAR adversely affected the efficiency of the role of the peacekeeping forces and the efforts of the peace process. The main challenge is the denial of access to MINUSCA troops by the government of CAR to know the real issues that drive and nurture the conflict; The second challenge is the lack of an appropriate working approach between the two institutions (no-trust relationship). Based on these findings, the study suggests the need for strengthening the role of the MINUSCA for dealing with the CAR conflict effectively. Likewise, both institutions should ensure a good working relationship between them. Keywords: United Nations Peacekeeping Mission, Conflict Resolution, Armed groups, Central African Republic.
