Abstract

This study was carried out to assess the emerging socio-economic opportunities of the mineral markets in Geita Region Tanzania. Through the administration of structured questionnaires, interviews and field observations, information was gathered on respondents’ views about emerging socio-economic opportunities brought by mineral markets by using qualitative approach. The results from this study found a direct relationship between education level, occupation status and awareness of respondents on the influence of mineral markets to the emergence of socio-economic opportunities in Geita Region. Findings revealed the increase of people’s sources of income generation; Employment opportunities increased; Also, various kinds of business emerged after mineral market was launched. The study recommends to have collective measures among key mineral markets stakeholders such as Mineral dealers, brokers, miners and government agencies in order to improve the efficiency of these markets; Measures suggested in this study include: Provision of education to public on the significant of mineral market, Transparent in selling and buying minerals, Community participation and involvements, Developing policies which will enable monitoring of the market, Improving security services, Service infrastructures should be improved, Improvement of customer care in mineral market, Employment of the competent and skilled workers and Developing a performance measures. The study concludes that the socio-economic opportunities in Geita has been increasingly since the establishment of mineral markets. Keywords: Socio-Economic, Opportunities, Mineral Markets,
