Abstract
This work evaluated effects of tourism activities to the local community living adjacent to the Arusha National Park. The growth and development of tourism in Tanzania bring both negative and positive effects to the local people. The specific objectives of the study were to: identify the tourism activities in the study area; to evaluate the positive and negative effects of tourism activities to the local community living Adjacent to ANAPA and to examine the opinions of the local community towards tourism activities conducted adjacent to ANAPA.Both primary and secondary data were used to collect data in this study from a sample of selected respondents. SPSS, Excel and content analysis were applied to analyze data generated from the field. The effects of tourism activities basically are the consequences of either the development of the tourism industry or the presence of tourism activities in the area. It has been found that the main tourism activities undertaken adjacent to ANAPA are walking, cycling, bird watching, photography tourism and mountain climbing. The findings revealed that tourism activities adjacent to ANAPA had significant effects on the sustainability of the host communities environmentally, socially and economically. It is recommended that community involvement and participation must be encouraged by tourism planners and developers to ensure the sustainability of tourism activities and development to the local people. Lastly, it is very important to promote tourism in a sustainable way in order to increase positive effects and minimize negative effects to the local people.
