Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the role of Export Processing Zones (EPZ) industrial parks development on the economic development of Tanzania, citing Dar es Salaam as a focal point of the study. The study was guided by research-specific objectives namely assessing the way Domestic and Foreign Direct investment affect impact of EPZ industrial parks in the study area, the way foreign currency inflows from established EPZ industrial parks affect economic development in the study area, and the way employment creation from established EPZ industrial parks affect economic lives of people in the study area. The study adopted an explanatory research design, and a sample of 150 EPZ industrial park companies were selected as respondents to this study. Research study adopted an explanatory research design which helped explain the relationship between EPZ industrial park KPIs and the performance of key sectors of the economy in the respective study area. Simple random sampling procedures were used to select targeted respondents. The study found that EPZ industrial parks program in Tanzania play a significant role in the economic development of people and observed a positive relationship between Domestic and Foreign Direct Investment and the performance of key sectors of the economy. Also, the study confirms a positive relationship between capital investment, foreign currency inflows, employment level and the performance of key sectors of the economy. Moreover, corporate social responsibilities and linkages with local entrepreneurships have been identified to be essential elements impacted by the EPZ program, especially in rural areas where such social and entrepreneurship engagements impact livelihood of the poor. The study concluded and recommended that, since EPZ industrial park program have been identified to play a significant role in the economy, there is a need for the Government to expand their services and reach more people in different regions of Tanzania through a scheme of setting aside land for Special Economic Zones, and putting in place necessary infrastructures, where such EPZ industrial parks can be established.
