Abstract

The focus of this study was to assess the effect of single window system on cross-border trade efficiency. The study specifically sought to assess the effect of ICT, trade regulation and trade efficiency as aspects of the single window system on cross-border trade efficiency. To attain the study’s objectives, a questionnaire survey method was used as a tool to collect data from 100 respondents at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). Questionnaires were supplied to all respondents who were obtained through a convenience sampling method. Statistical procedures were used to analyse data obtained from the field i.e., the use of multiple regression analysis with the aid of the SPSS software version 20.0. Regression results indicated that ICT had a strong positive effect on cross-border trade efficiency (β = 0.062, p = 0.05, t = 2.891), trade regulation in single window system had a significant effect on cross-border trade efficiency (β = 0.110, p = 0.05, t = 1.977) and finally, trade facilitation had also a strong effect on cross-border trade efficiency (β = 696, p = 0.05, t = 7.106). The results indicate that the adoption of the single window system by the aviation industry was necessary to enable efficient and transparent and easy movement of information from one authority to another hence promoting international trade and encouraging foreign investment in the country. The study however, recommends that with all incredibly positive benefits of the single system, the implementation has to be enhanced by empowering SWS operators and end users, enhancing ICT facilities and encouraging use of the system.
