Abstract

A number of motivation schemes have been introduced in Tanzania by the government to motivate employees. However a key problem in this regard appear to be low incentives and inadequate funds allocated to the health sector (MOHSW 2014). Thus, this study intended to assess the provision of motivation at Morogoro Region Referral Hospital in Morogoro Region. The study was guided by three specific objectives including; identification of non financial incentives provided to workers, determination of provision of cash incentives to workers and investigation of perceptions of customers on the performance.The study employed both quantitative and qualitative research designs in gathering, processing and analyzing data. A total number of 216 respondents participated in the study and data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations and documentary review. Quantitative data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science, qualitative data were transcribed and then coded with the help of ATLAS.ti. The findings indicated that provision of incentives has contributed significantly to improvement of services offered. Incentives identified by the respondents as contributors to performances were delegation of authority, employees’ promotion, employee’s involvement in planning, bonuses and allowances and conducive working environment. Policies and public service acts insist on provision of incentives as motivation factor to public workers. The study expected to contribute to initiatives to improve workers motivation. It was searcher recommends that in order to improve the organization performance motivation scheme should be improved to boost workers’ morale and improve organization performance.
