Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of port congestion on port performance. Specifically, to identify the effect of port congestion on port performance, to identify the factors of port congestion, to determine the appropriate measures to be taken in order to overcome the factors of port congestion. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to a population of Dar es Salaam port with sample size of 110 respondents. Questionnaires and Interviews, have been used as data collection tools, data analysis was done through a special pro gramme known as SPSS.Findings revealed that, port has got great chance on the contribution of the growth of economy. A port contributes much to the economic growth of a country. However, there are factors of port congestion which are delay in service delivery since there is no enough handling equipments for containers, bulk cargos andport operation activities including vessel operations and yard operations stop moving. Furthermore the researcher recommended that TPA should take various measures in order to improve the port performance. These include formation of port improvement committee, acquisition of additional handling equipment, paving additional stacking areas for containers, conducting awareness campaigns to CFA and the general public on the importance of timely clearance of cargo from the port.Finally the researcher recommends that further studies should be takenon this area; problems of port congestion at Container Terminal, including TPA and TICTS and the way forward.
