Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
Motivation in educational institutions is among the things to be taken in to
consideration so as to achieve the goals and objectives of education in any country.
This study examined the perception of teachers on motivation in learning. It
addresses the strategies that teachers use to create, maintain and protect motivation.
The study focused on the factors that affect motivation in classroom settings. Mixed
methods were used to observe 100 teachers in four secondary schools at Kinondoni
Municipal council. It was found that, majority of teachers viewed motivation as of
paramount importance for students’ performance. The study also found that teachers
use various strategies to create, maintain and protect motivation in classroom
settings. Among these strategies includes providing room for open exchange of
ideas, accepting mistakes as normal part of learning, and creating encouraging and
supporting environment for students to learn and grow. The study also found several
factors that affect motivation in the classroom. These included mastery of subject
matter on the part of the teacher which constrained the classroom discussion and
constructive feedback. Other factors included large number of students in one
classroom, which impeded quality discussion forcing teachers to resort to lecture
method. Lack of teaching aid was also found to be a factor affecting motivation in
classroom. The study suggested that teachers should be supported academically to
acquire adequate mastery of subject matter and classroom management to help them
teach and use appropriate teaching methodologies and classroom management
techniques. The Study recommends also that Ministry of Education and Vocational
Training should see to it that the number of students in the classroom is manageable
to allow effective teaching and raise students learning.
