Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of internal control management systems on the performance of mining companies in Tanzania. The study was conducted at African Underground Mining Services in Geita as a case study. A post-positivist philosophy was employed along with a descriptive research design and a quantitative approach. The study used a sample of 174 African Underground Mining Services Geita staff. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected data were analyzed through Descriptive Statistics and Multiple Linear Regressions Analysis. According to the findings, all five independent variables—control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, and monitoring activities—were found to be positively and significantly influencing the dependent variable, operational performance. Therefore, the study concludes that internal control aspects such as control environment, risk management, control activities, information and communication, and monitoring activities are all important in enhancing the performance of the mining companies. The study recommends that the management of the mining companies should invest more in building a better internal control system for their businesses.
