Abstract

The local chicken business project for improving youth income was implemented in the Mtitu ward by the group of youth identified during the CNA exercise carried out in April 2023. The community needs assessment involved community members, village leaders, ward leaders and community department officers from Kilolo District. The collection of primary data involved a sample of 70 community of which 40 attended questionnaires and the rest were involved in Focus group discussions and interviews. Office reports, published and unpublished reports used to collect secondary data. The collected data were analysed using SPSS software and presented in forms of tables and descriptions. The CNA enabled the community to identify their needs and come up with possible interventions to address the identified needs. The pairwise ranking tool used to rank the needs and sustainable income was highly scored need and the local chicken business project was proposed as the intervention to address the need. The group members were trained in business, marketing and entrepreneurship skills so that they can be able to implement the proposed project in efficiency manner. After the training the group were supported with the fund from BEMFRANK Company to start up the project. To ensure the project is well implemented, the group was closely monitored to ensure that the project is well performing and will be sustainable but also to make sure that the project objectives are met by making sure that group members improve their income through saving and investing in more income-generating activities and other more people benefit from the project so that income poverty is decreased at a large scale.
