Abstract

The study investigated the role of Local Government Authorities (LGAs) on promoting local economic development. Objectives of the study were to assess the role of LGAs on improving living standards of its people and identified its role on creation of employment opportunities. The study used Tanga city council as case study where officials of the city council and its residents were targeted population. The study employed as sample size of 64 respondents selected purposively for officials and used stratified and cluster sampling for residents in the Tanga city council. Findings showed that, LGAs, Tanga city as case has better position to attain local economic development through different roles including improving of living standards and creation of employment opportunities. Findings show that, LGAs like Tanga city council has significant role to improve living standards of its people by means of investing on quality life, access to quality health services, nurturing material and psyscho-social wellbeing of people, offering access to quality education and motivating teachers, undertaking plans to close a gap of class disparity and poverty reduction as well as building quality health facilities. Moreover, findings identified the role of LGAs on creation of employment opportunities with means like provision of loans, grants, allocation of land for economic entities, building business infrastructure as well as having own programmes to counter unemployment like opening of Television station like Tanga TV. Throughout different literature works and study’s findings, it has been found that, the LGAs like Tanga city council are so far in a better place, spatially to promote local economic development due to their closeness to the spots of development action in local areas under their jurisdiction.
