Abstract

This study aimed to assess the relationship between illegal immigration and an increase in crime rates in Tanzania: the case of the Rukwa Region.Specifically, the study aimed at determining the magnitude of illegal immigrants’ involvement in increase crimes rates in Tanzania, investigating the categories of crime rates related to illegal immigrants, investigate the routes illegal immigrants use in increase crime rates in Rukwa region, and identifying measures that can be taken to limit the increase of crime rates connected to illegal immigrants. A total of 40 respondents were involved and responded to questionnaires, which included police officers, immigration officers, court officers and prison services officers. The study was conducted in the Rukwa Region, which is located at the border with Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and near Burundi, where there is a huge influx of illegal immigrants. The sample selected from the population was purposive sampling, and method used to collect the data was questionnaires, which were administered to respondents by personal mode of distribution. The findings revealed that illegal immigrants are increasing crimes in the region,among them illegal fishing, possession of government trophies, possession of fire arms, possession of government documents and living in the country without valid documents.
