Abstract

The study overall objective was to investigate the flood related disaster preparedness and socio economic activities of River floods, the case of Msimbazi River in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania. Specific objectives were to examine the strategies for flood disaster preparedness, to assess the effects of river floods and to determine socio economic activities carried along the Msimbazi River. The research design was descriptive in nature. Data were collected using questionnaires. The total study participants were 75 including local leaders and members of local community along Msimbazi River Valley. 60 were household members (main respondents) selected by Slovin’s formula (scientific formula) and 15 were local leaders (key informants) selected by purposive sampling technique. The study findings revealed strategies for River flood disaster preparedness to be a priority from government that engages financial resources to tackle the flood problem and increasing technical capacity to address disaster risk reduction. The major of river flood were revealed to be severe loss to people’s life, property and destruction of physical infrastructure. Lastly, River flood causing activities were revealed to be sand digging and agriculture at Msimbazi River Valley. The conclusion for the study was that, River floods are natural calamities and are inevitable in nature, the best way to deal with them is to have pre disaster preparedness mechanisms. The study recommends infrastructure-upgrading projects like construction of modern bridge aiming at overcoming flood destructive force and resettlement schemes for local communities will be part of the long-term recovery process.
