Abstract

A dissertation on Improved income among poor widows through vegetable production at Kipagamo ward in Njombe District in Tanzania is a result of a Community Needs Assessment (CNA) conducted at Kipagamo ward in Njombe district. The CNA revealed that Income poverty is a core problem among poor widows in the ward. This problem is caused by multiple factors including denied access to inheritance, poor government support, poor climatic condition, lack of access to credits/loans, and lack of skills for self-employment. The poor widows in Kipagamo ward pointed out that vegetable production is an intervention that will enable them to improve their income. This is due to the extensive experience that the majority have in vegetable farming. The widows needed access to some resources including land and financial resources for buying some inputs including seeds, hoes, pesticides, fertilizers, and buckets. Stakeholders including NGO, ward councilor, and village chairmen were ready to contribute these inputs. The stakeholders were organized and contributed all necessary inputs. The widows executed the project after being trained, the project was a great success as the widows were able to apply effectively the skills and knowledge imparted to them. Marketing of the project outputs was done effectively, spinach and kale produced by the widows were in high demand. Supply of the vegetables was good and the widows generated high incomes which enabled them to meet their needs and that of their dependents. Hence the income among poor widows in the Kipagamo ward was improved through vegetable production.
