Abstract

The general objective of this study was to investigate factors influencing teachers’ motivation and job performance in Public Secondary Schools within Shinyanga municipality. Specifically, the study sought to identify factors of motivation that can lead to teacher’s job satisfaction or dissatisfaction in public secondary schools within Shinyanga municipality, assess factors of motivation that available at good or poor performing schools in public secondary schools within Shinyanga municipality and to document suggestions for improving teacher’s job satisfactions in Public Secondary Schools within Shinyanga municipality. The study employed a quantitative research design, instrument for data collection was questionnaire. This study involve100 respondents as sample sizes that are teachers of public secondary school in Shinyanga Municipality. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistical methods. While the qualitative responses were coded, categorized and thematically analyzed. The findings of the study show that motivation of teachers in Shinyanga Municipality was affected by factors such as poor working conditions, low salary/pay, unfavorable policies on education, delays in promotions and community’s negative perception towards teaching. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the government should improve teachers’ compensation and pay as well as to improve working conditions. The government should also review policies on secondary education for example by making teachers participate and have a say on matters regarding the management.
