Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of teachers’ motivation on the Students’ academic performance in Public Secondary Schools. The study was guided by four specific objectives namely; to examine stakeholders’ perception on teachers’ motivation vis-à-vis secondary school students’ academic performance in Muleba District, to investigate how teachers’ are motivated and their influence on secondary school students academic performance in Muleba District, to assess motivation types likely to improve teachers efficiency and effectiveness in improving students’ academic performance in Muleba District and assess the challenges of teachers’ motivation and its influence on secondary school students’ academic performance in Muleba District. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in this research. Probability and purposive sampling techniques were also used to get the representatives in this research, where a sample of 92 respondents was obtained and involved to get the intended data. The researcher used descriptive research design. Lastly, quantitative data was analyzed using cross tabulation and calculation of percentages whereas qualitative data was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings of the study show that teachers in Muleba District had grievances concerning the working condition that negatively affected their motivation towards their teaching. The research concludes that there is a direct relationship between teacher motivation and students’ academic performance. As such, it recommends that Teachers’ Service Commission and other stake holders should effectively implement the civil service standing orders which include improved working condition, improved salary and payment of arrears, provision of incentives and promotion of teachers appropriately. The research recommends that further research could focus on carrying out similar research in other Districts within Tanzania. It farther recommends that a research could be carried out to find out challenges facing and the impact of lack of promotion among teachers.
